Hip Hop Retreat Week was about bringing people that are aspiring as well as established together for the culture. Many media personalities, artists, producers, dj’s, hosts, industry professionals, and curators came together for the first annual hip hop retreat week in Brooklyn which lasted 5 days but had events before during and after for those who are like minded. I had the pleasure of being a panelist as well as a moderator during HHRW 2016, and i look forward to next year and all to come!

This is part one of the podcast panel, where we spoke about going beyond radio/podcasts, and about the latest tastemakers.

ADVICE FOR ENTREPRENEURS
Indeed you might ask, how can an entrepreneur need advice from a fellow entrepreneur?

Well I will answer; because not all of the ones out have life and or business experience.

That being said I would like to share a few thoughts that may help others that currently freelance, own a small or large business, or are in plans to do so.

First bit of advice is regarding FOUNDATION!

In order to build yourself in your field you need to have a strong foundation, much like a house. if you’re weak you will need to be strong.

Your team reflects highly of who you are. You must also have a strong team.

Together you will excel and be able to meet your business goals and satisfy the goals in your business relationships.

Second; you need to have GOALS in order to meet them right?

Think about what drives you?, what motivates you? Then think about how you can achieve everything necessary to meet the goals you set. GOOD now that you’ve done so LISTEN UP.

INVEST IN YOURSELF, AND YOUR GOALS

If you want to be a professional be a damn good one. Research your profession or craft, invest in the thing that you need.

Things I advise are but not limited to; formal training in your craft or line of business, tools required such as software programs to utilize or equipment and or instruments if your profession requires them.

For example:

If you’re an actor take classes, obtain experience on set and off set (volunteer, network, and expand your knowledge while doing so) to then pursue paid work. Purchase different wardrobe options so that you may submit for different castings (nurse, doctor, cop, fireman, lawyer, etc) It will land you more options.

Obtain as much EXPERIENCE as you can, you will then be in high demand. In ANY form of business, this is important.

That being said, expanding on that need for experience in all businesses you can establish and maintain internships or apprenticeships where eventually you can then get a job referral based on the “show and prove” method. Show your WORK ETHIC prove you’re worthy.

Once you’ve established your existence in your business community begin to think about your next steps.

How can I create a steady income?

How can I obtain the tools I need for my goals moving forward?

Who can I offer my business to and how do I do so?

ETC.

EXTRA STEPS ONCE THE BALL IS ROLLING FOR YOU:

Protect yourself.

Protect your content.

What do I mean by “protect yourself and your content” ?

Obtain all individuals needed that will protect you and your business.

Lawyers specific to your business.

Legal ownership and rights to your content, so that all are protected.

and more.

TO BE CONTINUED.

-This is a small portion of my advice to anyone who is an entrepreneur. For more details, to ask me questions, or to seek referrals for anything i mentioned, please feel free to write me a message I will reply.

Thanks for reading!

JDM: I remember when I met and interviewed you and the group Corp Cartel. We had a lot of fun in that interview. The thing that stands out was that you are very hyper and very focused. We were having an awesome interview and at one point I said, “Do you have any shout outs”?. You shouted out your girlfriend first before anything. Jokingly I began the nickname of “the CUFF CARTEL” when the other members followed suit. I admire that because most men in these days don’t even give their woman a shoutout at all nonetheless acknowledge them publicly. Over the last few years, I have followed your career and your path. I am very happy to announce to your fan base that you married the love of your life and still balance your career. You are one of few artists that has managed to beat the stereotype.  To be a true gentleman and a true artist, takes respect and dedication. I commend you!.

I hope everyone enjoyed this Q&A and that they keep up with you!.

Sir Mic ‘I Can’t Help It’

 HatBW.jpg

Bournemouth based multi-genre rapper / lyricist Sir Mic returns with the release of his brand new single ‘I Can’t Help It’.

With four popular mixtapes (Mini Me Vol 1, 2 & 3 and Working Class Hero), a host of impressive support slots (including the likes of Tinie Tempah, So Solid Crew, DJ Cameo and DJ Semtex), and a vast feature discography under his belt, Sir Mic is well on his way to establishing himself as one of the finest rappers to come out of the south coast in a very long time.

Renowned for his distinct and diverse style, Sir Mic has the ability to work in a whole host of genres including hip hop, grime, dubstep and dance, and has even been approached for feature work by producers of the biggest dance compilation in the UK, Clubland Smashed, as well as the hotly tipped up and coming hip hop producer Stealf, who later asked the eclectic rapper to feature on his debut album alongside Jadakiss, Joell Ortiz, Ruste Juxx and many other US / UK heavyweights.

Sir Mic marked the beginning of 2011 with the release of his single ‘I Ain’t Going Anywhere’ (featuring Cynikal & Jasmine Knight), which went on to become a huge hit online with heavy press support and over 20,000 views on YouTube.

The south coast rapper now follows up his debut commercial release with an equally impressive effort titled ‘I Can’t Help It’. The piano driven, energetic instrumentation allows Sir Mic to tell an all too common tale of boozing on a weekend with effortless delivery, and the hands-in-the-air chorus line displays the rappers open mindedness when it comes to incorporating different musical tones in his music.

‘I Can’t Help It’ has the potential to become Sir Mic’s most successful release to date, because despite having enough lyrical substance to impress the purists, almost every British citizen between the ages of 18 and 30 can relate to the single’s subject matter. Accompanied by a brilliantly original video (shot in both first and third person in a host of rowdy Bournemouth clubs), ‘I Can’t Help It’ is sure to become another viral hit for Sir Mic, and mark another step on the ladder towards commercial acclaim.

November is Hip Hop History Month and I had the pleasure of attending an official Zulu Nation 37th Anniversary event at The Hip Hop Culture Center at Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem NYC.

My personal VIP invitation came from no other than Supreme Selo and Lord Yoda of Zulu themselves. The event was a peaceful unity among all that believe in what Zulu has to offer and Hip Hop in our society. We were accompanied by all our friends such as Afrika Bambaata, Black Spades, Gustapos, DJ Johnny Juice, Cheesecake RSC, BPS Productions, Straightman, Elijio Rivera “Jinx the tee shirt king”, Ness, Pop Master Fabel, Ice T, Coco Chanel, Beenie Siegel, Big Daddy Kane, Immortal Technique, The Cold Crush Brothers, and so many more.

I got to catch a tag on a soon to be piece of memorabilia from the event..

I made myself useful for a while helping Jinx the Tee Shirt King with his vendor table and convinced a kid to buy the last shirt in a size small.. he changed on the spot proud to rep for the anniversary!

It was packed to the tee with vendors selling Zulu memorabilia, artwork, good food, hip hop gear, drinks etc. I had some rice and peas, mac and cheese and jerk chicken ..and umm a nutcracker SHHHHHHH 😉

I also got some shirts courtesy of Jinx the Tee Shirt King.. it was a great night!

A new liquor by Ice T was on display and came in all different types of bottles or containers shaped like everyday items such as a cane that easily slides open to reveal the drink, or a high heel shaped bottle..DOPENESS!!!!

Performances ensued thru the evening and I have photos to show coming up soon.. let’s just say it was the illest lineup and if you missed it your probably under a rock! I wont get too crazy with details.. but I will say someone made a statement “You wont hear any of that young money-lil wayne or nicki minaj up in here .. this is TRUE HIP HOP!” and I lost it laughing to myself.. there are so many people who idolize Young Money lately and have no idea about Hip Hop History.. I appreciate the old and the new but I LOVE The true!!

So much to write so little time I will be back with an update and edit this post JUST FOR YOU!!

Peace and Blessings .. Jackie da Model aka BABY J! 😉
